Upcoming Sanctuary Projects

Gully Water Renewal Project-
Integrated Water & Fire Protection

Water is life, especially in times of drought, heat, and fire.

The purpose of this project is to restore and strengthen a vital water source within the sanctuary, transforming a dry dam into a reliable lifeline for the animals who depend on it. By deepening and re shaping the dam, we aim to secure a sustainable supply of water for native wildlife, birds in care, and the surrounding environment.

This project will also play a critical role in protecting the sanctuary during bushfire events, providing essential water for firefighting and sprinkler systems that help safeguard aviaries and habitats.

At its heart, this project is about resilience, protection and ensuring that every animal in our care and those who share our landscape have access to the most basic necessity: water.

Freedom Flight Aviary- Multi Stage Expansion Plan

Freedom Flight Aviary Project – Stage 1

The purpose of the Freedom Flight Aviary Project – Stage 1 is to establish a safe, spacious, and enriching flight environment for domestic birds in permanent sanctuary care. This program aims to restore the fundamental ability to fly, enabling birds to express natural behaviours, improve physical health, and support psychological wellbeing.

Through the construction of a secure, predator-proof aviary, Stage 1 lays the foundation for a long-term, multi-stage development that will expand into a dynamic, interconnected aviary system. This project not only enhances the quality of life for birds already in care but also increases the sanctuary’s capacity to support additional birds in need.

The program is further designed to foster community involvement, education, and shared responsibility in animal welfare and conservation, creating a space where people can actively contribute to meaningful, hands-on change.

Pouch To Pasture Project- Construction of Soft Release Habitat

The Pouch To Pasture Project will be  created to provide a safe, natural, and supportive environment for orphaned and hand-raised macropod joeys as they transition from human care back to life in the wild.

This critical stage of rehabilitation focuses on encouraging independence while gradually reducing human interaction. Within this space, joeys are given the opportunity to develop essential survival skills, including grazing, social interaction, environmental awareness, and natural movement across varied terrain.

The enclosure is designed to replicate a natural habitat, offering shelter, security, and access to native vegetation, while protecting animals from stress and external threats. Through a carefully managed soft-release process, joeys are able to leave the enclosure at their own pace, returning for support as needed until they are fully confident and self-sufficient.

This project plays a vital role in improving long-term release outcomes, ensuring that each animal is given the best possible chance to thrive in the wild where they belong.

The Roost & Roam Project- Construction of Habitat for Ground- Dwelling Birds in Permanent Care

The Roost & Roam Project will establish purpose-built, secure habitats for ground-dwelling birds residing in permanent care at Musical Gully Wings & Wildlife Sanctuary. These species, including domestic birds such as chickens, ducks, pigeons, quail, and pheasants, require specialised environments that allow for natural behaviours while ensuring ongoing safety and welfare.

The project involves the construction of multiple enclosed habitats featuring sheltered roosting areas, open roaming space, and predator-resistant fencing. Each habitat will be designed to support species-specific needs, including appropriate substrates, weather protection, and enrichment opportunities that promote foraging, dust bathing, and social interaction.

Built using durable, low-maintenance materials, these habitats will provide long-term infrastructure to support birds in permanent sanctuary care. The design prioritises both animal wellbeing and operational efficiency, ensuring safe containment while allowing carers to effectively manage and maintain the space.

Safe Haven Recovery Project- Multi Stage Construction of Wildlife Quarantine & Recovery Zone

The Safe Haven Recovery Project will provide a dedicated, biosecure space for the safe intake, assessment, treatment, and short-term rehabilitation of native wildlife.

This facility is essential to protect both incoming wildlife patients and existing sanctuary animals by preventing the spread of disease and ensuring appropriate isolation during critical care periods.

The project will include species-appropriate quarantine infrastructure,

A central treatment room will be established within a portable building, equipped with water, electrical access and climate control to help support recovery and rehabilitation.

By creating a controlled and purpose-built environment, the sanctuary will significantly improve animal welfare outcomes, increase rehabilitation success rates, and strengthen its capacity to respond to wildlife emergencies within the local community.

The Joey Journey Project- Construction of Nursery Yard

The Joey Journey Project is designed to provide a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment for hand-raised macropod joeys in care. Located close to the main residence, this dedicated space allows for efficient, consistent care and monitoring during the most critical stages of development.

The area will include a secure exercise yard that supports natural movement, strength building, and early behavioural development. The space will also function as a designated toileting area, encouraging healthy routines and hygiene while simplifying daily husbandry practices.

Designed with both animal welfare and caregiver accessibility in mind, the enclosure promotes confidence, independence, and natural behaviours in a controlled environment. This project plays a vital role in preparing joeys for progression into larger enclosures and eventual soft-release pathways, supporting their journey towards returning to the wild.
